There is often a common misconception that modern slavery is a thing of the past, but in 2017, the coalition known as Alliance 8.7 jointly estimated that for some 40 million people, slavery is still a reality. The Global Slavery Index 2018 also estimated that during 2016 there were 136,000 people living in slavery in the UK on any given day. This reflects a prevalence rate equating to 2.1 victims for every thousand people in the country.
Statistics on modern slavery, however, can only be estimated as there will be many cases left unreported and hidden within supply chains. This lack of uncertainty makes it ever more important for retailers and brands to take control, comply with the legislation and protect their workers and their businesses.
